Outdoor Bar Furniture: Building Your Own Outdoor Bar

Have you just put in a great patio only to realize that something is missing. Could that something be an outdoor bar? Even if you don’t drink the hard stuff, it’s nice to have a place where you can serve cold soft drinks and juice.

Many different companies make outdoor bar furniture in both classic and contemporary designs. Some of it is just as beautiful as the furniture you have in your home. Even simple wooden sets, however, are going to cost you several hundred dollars, and it may be that it just isn’t in your budget right now.

You can have your own unique bar furniture by building it yourself. There are many plans for barstools available online, but in this article we’re going to focus on building your own simple bar. You will need plans and materials, but the style of bar you want and the materials you use are strictly up to you.

The first thing you’ll need to do is design your bar. You may want to find a plan that someone else has made to sell, or you can come up with your own. Make your drawings as detailed as possible. Start with the length, width, and height you want the bar to be. If you want a roof over your bar, draw in the dimensions for it, too. Make note of the size of the base of the bar as well as the size of the larger top. Make drawings of the front, sides, back, and roof of the bar so you’ll know exactly what you need to build.

After you have your plans all drawn out with all relevant measurements on them, it’s time to decide the type of materials you want to use for your bar. You can make your bar out of wood with a veneered top, concrete, stone, granite, corrugated metal, brick, and anything else that would be appropriate in an outside setting. Make sure that you purchase any materials and tools you need at once to save having to make more trips to the lumberyard.

You’ll need a strudy foundation of some kind to build your bar on. You might want to build it right on the patio or deck. Although you can just build it on a level piece of ground which you’ve cleared and smoothed out, it will be more durable if it’s built on something that will hold up to the elements better. A cement foundation is a good choice, because it is solid, durable, and weather-proof.

Start work at the base of your bar. Once it’s built straight and level, you can frame in the rest of the bar, including the posts that will support the roof. After you have the frame, you can add front and side panels as well as a top. The back of the bar will be open so that you can add shelves for storage. If you run a power wire out to the bar area, you’ll be able to add a small refrigerator which you can keep ice and cold drinks in.

When you’ve finished building your bar, you’re going to want to add several coats of a sealant that is made for the type of material you used. This will help protect the bar from extreme weather conditions. Once the sealant dries, your bar will be open and ready for business.
